Visit the Pozalagua caves in the Carranza valley
Discover an unsolved scientific mystery inside the Pozalagua caves, one of the Basque Country's most spectacular geological curiosities.
The Cave of Pozalagua, discovered by chance in 1957, is located in the beautiful Karranza valley in the Encartaciones area, just 50 km from Bilbao.
It is 125 metres long, 70 wide and 20 high, and its mouth stands 500 metres above sea level. The route through it is labyrinthine, flanked by stalactites and towering flowstone, stalagmites and columns. Here you can admire one of the greatest concentrations of eccentric stalactites (helictites) in the world. These helictites defy the laws of gravity, forming whimsical shapes intertwining in all directions.
