Rafa Gorrotxategi Txokolate Museum
During his fourth journey to the West Indies, Christopher Columbus was the first European to taste a certain dark and sour drink. A century later, cocoa was valued even more than gold around the world. From Juan de Zumarraga to the Guipuzcoan Company of Caracas, Basques were many among the ones who contributed to its expansion, directly linked to our economic, social and cultural evolution
The journey in time arrives at a new port with Rafa Gorrotxategi’s Museum, in Tolosa. If the Basque Country is recognised for its long chocolate tradition, his family has stood out for three generations in the alchemy of this exquisite West Indies elixir
His father, Jose Mari Gorrotxategi, founded a museum back in the 80s, located in a XVIII century confectionery, which documented five centuries of wax, confectionery and chocolate. Today Rafa takes over with a new space that introduces a new format, led by a tasting and projection room focused on transparency, experience and interactivity.
A museum that offers taste and knowledge equally.
This constant developing museum proofs that the Gods’ ancient food will keep having a local branch in Tolosa, and in XXI’s century Basque Country.
